Kenneth G. Malm

President and Principal, The Craftmark Group


Kenneth G. Malm grew up in Northern Virginia, graduating from W. T. Woodson High School and the University of Virginia. Malm began working in the building industry as a laborer at the age of 16 and continued in the industry throughout college and after. By the age of 27, Malm was a division manager for NVR, managing their Maryland Profit Center from a start-up operation to over 300 homes a year, making it the most profitable division in the company in less than three years. Malm became a regional vice-president for NVLand (Elm Street Development) in the late 80’s, responsible for buying, developing and selling residential communities to homebuilders.

Malm is now President and Principal of the home building company he founded in December 1991, The Craftmark Group. Craftmark has consistently been ranked in the top 100 builders nationally by Professional Builder Magazine and is one of the largest privately held homebuilder in the Washington region (based on dollar volume of sales). The Craftmark Group, comprised of Craftmark Homes and Craftstar Homes, has delivered 350-550 homes a year since the mid 1990’s, exceeding $375 million in annual revenues, allowing the Washington Business Journal to rank it in the top 50 privately held businesses in the region.

Malm and his company have been recognized as winners of the Greater Washington Entrepreneur of the Year Award, Large Volume Builder of the Year Award from the Suburban Maryland Building Industry Association five times, Energy Star Leadership Award, plus over 50 other awards for design and quality, including numerous Finest for Family Living Awards, the H.O.W. Award of Excellence for Quality, the Quality Builder’s Warranty Mark of Excellence Award and nationally, several Best in American Living Awards and Builder’s Choice Awards.

Malm is past vice-president and director of the Homebuilders Care Foundation and a past sponsor of homes for Christmas in April through Craftmark. He is also a past director for the Suburban Maryland Homebuiders Association, a past director for Florida Tile (second largest domestic tile producer), a past director for Suburban Federal Savings Bank, a past Advisory Board member for BB&T, and sits on the investment committee for a local private equity fund, Blackstreet Capital. In addition Malm sits on the Advisory Board for the School of Building Construction at Virginia Tech and on the local Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity. He also coached youth sports for over ten years.
